Bartlett (1932)

  1. Aim

    • To see if people would alter information when given something unfamiliar to remember
  2. Method

    • Participants were given a story to read: "The War of the Ghosts"
      • Asked to recall as much about the story as accurately as possible after a few weeks
  3. Results

    • Participants found it difficult to remember parts of the story so they changed bits of it to it made more sense to them
      • Each time they retold the story, they changed some more parts
        • They put emphasis on some parts of the story
  4. Conclusion

    • Bartlett believed that our memory is altered by our own beliefs
  5. RECONSTRUCTIVE APPROACH OF MEMORY

  6. Evaluation

    • You cannot apply this study to everyday life, as we do not go around trying to remember a full story
      • Although when telling a story in everyday life, you sometimes put emphasis on what you are saying - or some aspects
        • Links back to the results of the study
