Causatives

  1. what are they?

    • a causative is an adjective of any type that produces an effect or expresses an effect
      • We use a causative verb when we want to talk about something that someone else did for us or for another person
        • example: tom got his client to agree to the terms of the contract
        • example: this bank does not allow companies to get new loans
  2. passive causatives

    • a passive causative is used when the focus is on the thing instead of the person. When you combine them together, you are essentially saying someone caused something to be done
      • example: rose has her hair cut
  3. active causatives

    • causative verbs are used when one thing or person causes another thing or person to do something
      • example: mary has george climb the tree
  4. causative verbs

    • a causative verb is a verb used to indicate that some person or thing makes—or helps to make—something happen
      • example: let, make, have and get
        • mom let me drive my bicycle
        • mom made me clean my room
        • I had my dad check on the bicycle
        • i couldnt get my dad to fix my bicycle
