Soldering

  1. Soft soldering

    • Joins metal parts together using lead-free alloy.
    • Used for light applications, e.g. electrical connections and plumbing joints.
    • Method: 1. flux is applied to the join to clean. 2. fluxed joint is heated using gas torch.
  2. Brazing/hard soldering

    • Used for heavy applications because the joint is stronger.
    • The alloy (shelter) melts at a higher temp. than soft solder.
    • Joins mild steel, but copper can be brazed.
    • Method: 1. borax flux mixed to paste with water and applied to joint. 2. heated to orange colour with gas torch and splatter melts around the join.
  3. Silver soldering

    • Like brazing, but uses silver based alloy.
    • Used on brass, copper and building metal.
    • Silver alloy melts at lower temp. than brazing spelter.
