Computer Performance

  1. Cache

    • Cache memory is a chip-based computer component
    • In order to be closer to the processor cache memory needs to be much smaller than main memory which means it has less storage space
    • Cache memory is a temporary storage area that the computers processor can retrieve data from easily
    • If you had more cache there would be more room for instructions
  2. Cores

    • Independent processors run the fetch decode execute cycle simultanously
    • The number of independent processors on the CPU
    • Dual core: 2 independent processors Quad core: 4 independent processors
  3. RAM

    • Stores the programs, parts of the operating system and files currently being used
    • Is volatile - deletes when device is turned off
    • Short for Random Access Memory
  4. Clock Speed

    • Clock speed is measured in hertz (Hz)
    • 1KHz = 1000 cycles per second
    • The number of fetch decode execute cycles a CPU can perform per second
