Computational Thinking

  1. Decomposition

    • The act of taking a problem and breaking it down into smaller more manageable parts.
    • Solving a crime: Who where when why?
  2. Abstraction

    • The act of removing unnecessary details from a problem to simplify it.
    • E.g The London Underground map. Do not need to know the speed of the train or type of train, just how to get there.
  3. Pattern Recognition

    • The process of identifying repeated elements to avoid solving the same problem more than once.
    • Move up (2) Move down (3) etc.
  4. Algorithms

    • A set of step by step instructions to solve a problem.
    • Abstructured english algorithm uses short, structured sentences to express the instructions.
    • Flowcharts
      • A flow chart is a type of diagram that can be used for an algorithm.
      • It is made up of arrows and the shapes, terminator, process, decision.
