Third Conditional / Mixed Conditional

  1. Third Conditional

    • Form/Structure
      • To make a sentence in the third conditional, we use:
        • If + past perfect, would/wouldn’t have + past participle.
      • As with all conditionals, you can also invert this structure:
        • Would have + past participle if + past perfect.
    • Usage
      • The third conditional is used to express the past consequence of an unrealistic action or situation in the past.
      • We often use the third conditional to express regrets – describing things we are sorry happened or didn’t happen.
    • Examples
      • If he had studied harder, he would have passed the exam.
      • I would have come to the meeting if you’d told me about it.
      • If you hadn’t invited me out, I’d have stayed in all day.
  2. Mixed Conditional

    • Form/Structure
      • We use the past simple with the If clause (2nd conditional) and would have + past participle with the main clause (3rd conditional)
      • If clause: If + Subject + Past Simple (Second conditional) Main clause: Subject + Would have + V. PP (Third conditional)
    • Usage
      • These mixed conditional sentences refer to an unreal present situation and its probable past result.
    • Examples
      • If I wasn't afraid of spiders, I would have picked it up.
      • I would have picked it up if I wasn't afraid of spiders.
      • If we didn't trust him we would have sacked him months ago.
  3. What is difference between: Third Conditional vs. Mixed Conditional?

    • The difference is that the third conditional explains something that happen in tha past and is impossible to do in the present, and the mixed conditional explains something hypotetical situations and their possible results.
