Derivate relations in Semantics

  1. Lexicon contains derived words when their meaning is not predictable.

    • Example in creation of real dictionaries:
      • It's more economical to list many derivates rather than define morphological rules, irregularities and exceptions.
  2. Causative verbs (Inchoative)

    • State, change of state
      • Example (same shape, words grammatically different):
        • The gates open at nine. The gates are open The porters opne the gates.
      • In other cases; the inchoative is morphologically derived from the adjective
        • The apples are ripe The apples are ripening  The sun is ripening the apples
  3. Agentive nouns

    • One derived from verbs and ends
      • Example: -er  -or skier, walker, murderer, calaculator, escalator
      • sky- skier
