Hardware Virtualization

  1. Types

    • Para-Virtualisation
      • In paravirtualization, the hardware not simulates and the guest software runs its isolated system. It is not necessary to simulate the hardware, but it utilizes an API which modifies the guest operating system.
    • Emulation Virtualisation
      • In emulation virtualization, hardware simulates by the virtual machine and it is independent. Here, the guest operating system does not require any other modification.
    • Full Virtualisation
      • In full virtualization, there is no need for any modification to run any application. In addition, the hardware architecture completely simulates, which benefits the guest software. There is an environment, quite similar to an operating system in a server.
  2. Definition

    • In hardware virtualization, software called hypervisor is used. With the help of hypervisor virtual machine, software embedded into the hardware component of the server.
  3. Benefits

    • More economical.
    • Efficient backup and recovery
    • Efficient in its operations
  4. Ring Layers

    • Ring 0
      • The hardware enforces that all privileged instructions get executed in Ring 0.
    • Ring 1
      • Ring -1 which is also called VMX root mode. The VMM runs in VMX root mode and the guests run in non-root mode.
    • Ring 2
      • Device drivers execute here.
    • Ring 3
      • code such as applications running on the operating system operates in less privileged rings, typically ring 3.
  5. Features

    • Increased Security
    • Managed Execution.
    • Portability is easy
