Visual
- When people need to see information to learn it, and this "seeing" takes many forms from spatial awareness, photographic memory, color/tone, brightness/contrast, and other visual information. Naturally, a classroom is a very good place for a visual learner to learn.
- Visual learning examples- Keep things tidy and organized. Prefer to read rather than listen to a story. Excel at handwriting and spelling. Stay focused on their work. Make to-do lists and plans for the future. Are more likely solitary learners rather than social but can benefit from group learning.
Auditory
- You learn by hearing and listening. You understand and remember things you have heard. You store information by the way it sounds, and you have an easier time understanding spoken instructions than written ones.
- Auditory learning examples- Sit where you can hear. Have your hearing checked on a regular basis. Use flashcards to learn new words; read them out loud. Read stories, assignments, or directions out loud. Record yourself spelling words and then listen to the recording.
Kinesthetic
- Requires that you manipulate or touch material to learn. Kinesthetic-tactile techniques are used in combination with visual and/or auditory study techniques, producing multi-sensory learning.
- Kinesthetic learning examples- when a child learns to use a swing or to ride a bike. They can read instructions or listen to instructions, but deep learning occurs via the process of doing.
Reading/Writing
- Learn primarily by reading and writing. They prefer to learn information by reading notes, handouts and textbooks. These learners make use of dictionaries and other reference materials. They also benefit by rewriting notes and rereading notes silently again and again
- Reading/writing learner examples- reading textbooks, taking notes, re-writing notes, re-reading notes, etc. Read your notes over (silently) again and again.
