Vision on Computers

  1. Analytical Computing

    • Charles Babbage (developed analytical engine - used for calculating mathematical formulas)
      • Ada Lovelace (published first algorithm and executed it)
  2. Human Augmentation

    • Vannevar Bush (Envisioned device "Memex"- seen as "enlarged intimate supplement to one's memory"). He also wrote an article called "As We May Think" in the Atlantic Monthly.
      • J.C.R. Licklider (Wrote an article "Man-Computer Symbiosis" and did research which led to the internet and GUI)
        • Ivan Sutherland (Developed Sketch Pad - interactive sketching on computers, stylus based interaction)
          • Douglas Engelbart (Founded Augmentation Research Center, made a prototype of NLS and gave a huge demo). NLS had networking, windows, hypertext, graphics, command input, video conferencing, the computer mouse, word processing, file version control, text editing, and numerous other features of modern computing. This demo is called "The mother of all Demos."
            • Douglas Engelbart's team disbanded and most of them joined Xerox PARC
              • Alan Key (Worked at Xerox PARC, Created with his team both "Smalltalk" and "Alto") Alto has the first OS on GUI with desktop metaphor, email client, WYSIWYG word processing etc...
                • Steve Jobs (He liked the GUI, Converted Prototypes to products, Started Lisa and Macintosh Computers)
                  • Macintosh led to inventions like powerpoint
          • ACM Symposium - developed interaction paradigms, AR, Touchscreen
            • Since then big companies(Apple, Microsoft and Google) started taking over on "Engineering of user interfaces."
