Dalton
- Dalton believed that matter is composed of atoms, which are the smallest particles and cannot be created or destroyed.
Democritus
- Democritus believed that atoms are eternal and indestructible, being the fundamental essence of matter.
Thomson
- Electrons, discovered by Thomson, are evenly distributed within a positively charged sphere. Contrary to Dalton's model, Thomson proposed that the atom was not indivisible, but rather a structure that could transfer electrons.
Rutherford
- Rutherford believed that atoms had a very small, dense nucleus, which concentrated most of the mass and contained the atom's positive charge. The negatively charged electrons would be located in the electrosphere, which is the empty space surrounding the nucleus. The model is compared to a solar system, where the Sun represents the nucleus and the planets represent the electrons orbiting it.
Bohr
- Bohr believed that atoms had a central nucleus and electrons orbiting it. Bohr also believed that electrons moved in circular orbits with fixed energies. He also believed that an electron could absorb energy to "jump" to a higher level or emit a photon to return to a lower level.
Electronic cloud model
- Currently, it is believed that atoms are made up of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, around which is a "cloud" of electrons. Atoms are divisible, and we know that they are not the smallest particles in existence, like quarks; there are particles even smaller than them.
Introduction
- In this work I will study the evolution of the theory of what an atom is like.
Conclusion
- In conclusion, over time, several people have created various theories about what the atoms that make up matter are like.
