1. Cyril Lodowic Burt

   • Backgourds
     • Born March 18th 1883
     • At age 11 received a scholarship to Christ Hospital school
     • Specialized in philosophy and Psychology at Oxford
     • 1913 Burt took the position of a school psychologist for London County Council
     • Died 10th Oct 1971
       • 1976 after death proclaimed a fraud
     • 1935-1950 published a ranged of articles
   • Beleifs
     • Educational ability was inherited
       • this ability can be proven by exams
     • Intelligence was determined at conception
     • A child's environment does not affect intelligence
   • Favoured the provision of fee Grammar Schools
     • Children Regardless of social class could benefit from it
       • Mostly only middle class children went to grammar school
   • Research
     • 1920 Burt asses the performance of normal children in schools
     • Looked at intelligence by motoring separated twins
     • first research article 1990

2. What is IQ and Intelligence

   • Pro and cons
     • IQ testing can identify children with Special needs
     • test allows children to be grouped by ability
     • IQ testing was often biased as it limits creative children
     • IQ test isn't and absolute of a child's intelligence
     • Focused on only the outcome rather then the process
   • Intelligence is the capacity to aquire knowledge
   • IQ -Intelligence Quotient
     • a measure of intelligence of an individual which has been obtain from a test

3. 11+ testing

   • Designed to suite children capacity
     • Grammar school for academic children
     • Technical school for children who want to pursue a trade
   • 11+ Test would test English,, Maths, Verbal and non verbal reasoning and general Intelligence and knowledge
   • Pass mark between 500 and 550 out of 700
   • Effects of 11+
     • many children had the same experience of school till the 11+
     • The test effect a child's self -esteem
     • Children from the same communities were separated and found it hard to adjust
     • Children were judge according to their intelligence
