Optical Storage
HOW IT WORKS?
- It stores operating systems and software applications. Normally a hard disk drive (HDD) or a solid state drive (SSD) External Storage: • External HDD’s and SDD’s can be used to store data. Examples: USB memory stick, memory cards, CD’s and DVD’s. Normally connected onto a computer by using USB or FireWire connections. Hard Disk Drive (HDD):
- Can store large amounts of data – 200GB to 1 TB • Magnetic disk drive consists pf a number of platters (disks) coated in a magnetic material, spinning around at 7200 rpm. Data is encoded into bits and written onto the surface as a series of change in the direction of the magnet
- HDD
- USB memory sticks and memory cards are compact form of flash memory used in: cameras, smartphones and tablet computers.
- Internal storage of a computer can use SDD’s, as it’s a larger piece of flash memory
- SDD’s use microscopic electronic switches to store data, they use switched called floating gate transistors to create a special cage (the gate) that traps electron flow within.
- The gate effect continues whether there is electricity in the system or not and so storage remains when the power is removed.

what IS OPTICAL STORAGE?
- Storage: Its non-volatile disk space, Sometimes called auxiliary memory, secondary memory or external memory. Storage devices like an external hard drive are used to store file like: pictures, program files and any other long term information needed to be kept. Data in a storage drive need to loaded into RAM before used Internal storage.
Why is it called Optical storage?
- It is because optical relates to sight, especially in relation to the action of light
- Optical storage devices save data as patterns of dots that are read using light
- It is because optical relates to sight, especially in relation to the action of light
