     • Alec is controlled, unfeeling and isolated person
       • He has killed his one and only friend

   • he grew up isolated
     • he was a member of the Anglo-Irish gentry
       • Most children were sent to school, Alec wasn't sent to school
         • Alec say that he doesn't mind being on his own

3. friendship with Jerry

   • Jerry has a huge effect on Alec
     • he says he's delighted that he has a friend.
       • "I had a friend. A private and secret friend."
         • Alec treasures his happy moments with Jerry
           • He enjoys swimming with Jerry and making a horse jump area.

4. Effect of Alicia

   • Alicia has a very negative effect on Alec.
     • she tries to control him and intimidates him.
       • Alec defy her decision to make him travel to Europe but is forced to accepted it.
         • Alec feels sorry for his father but not know how to comfort him

5. Crisis

   • There is a crisis occur in Alec's relationship with his parents.
     • After Alec returns from Europe he grows closer to him father Fredrick
       • He enjoys being back home with his father
         • Alicia is jealous of the relationship between them
           • Alicia says to Alec that Fredrick is not his Father.
             • Alec is devastated by this information and goes outside to escape from the house.
               • He departs from his father and seems very colds and formal as his father gives him money and his grandfathers watch.
