Sound

  1. Sound is a form of energy.

  2. Sound is a vibration.

    • Sound vibration need particles to travel through.
      • Sound can travel through solid, liquid and gases.
        • Which is the fastest?
          • Solid.
    • Sound needs vibration of particles to make sound.
  3. Some of the sounds you hear are loud and some are soft.

    • The intensity of a sound describes how loud or soft it is.
  4. Particles in a Transverse Wave moves up and down.

    • Particles in a Longitudinal Wave moves back and fourth.
      • Compression particles in the waves are squashed together.
        • Sound waves can be studied with a loudspeaker, signal generator, oscilloscope.
      • Longitudinal waves are when the displacement is parallel to the direction of the wave.
    • If the wavelength goes up the the frequency goes down.
    • Transverse waves is when the displacement is right angles to the direction of the wave.
  5. Amplitude is the maximum distance moved by a particle from its normal position.

    • Wavelength is the distance between the crests of the wave.
      • Frequency is the number of waves that pass per second.
      • Wavelength- Distance between 2 points of the wave (measured in meters)
    • Amplitude- the height of the wave.
    • The larger the amplitude of the wave on the trace, the louder the sound.
  6. A signal generator produces different types of signals.

    • A loudspeaker converts signals from the signal generator into sound waves.
      • An oscilloscope shows wave patterns and allows us to 'see' round.
  7. 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz is the hearing rage of a healthy young person.

  8. Sound waves only travel through a medium.

  9. 330 meters per second (in air)

  10. Sound waves can be reflected (echo).

    • The ear collects sound waves.
      • The waves travels through the ear canal.
        • The ear is very delicate. It contains thin membranes (thin layers of cells) and tiny bones, which are easily damaged.
