1. Structure of Atoms

   • Atoms consist of 3 parts (sub-atomic particles): protons and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons around the outside arranged in shells
     • Protons are positively charged, neutrons are neutral and electrons are negative

2. Group 1

   • Group 1 metals are called the alkali metals because they form alkaline compounds
   • Group 1 elements are very reactive so have to be stored in oil to keep air and water away from them

3. Group 7

   • Group 7 elements are known as the halogens. They all have 7 electrons in their outer shell.
