Memory A level

  1. Coding, capacity and duration

    • Coding
      • Once information gets into the memory system it is stored in different forms depending on memory store.
      • Alan Baddeley (1966)
        • Gave different lists of words to four groups of participants to remember.
        • Group 1 (acoustically similar) words sounding similar
        • Group 2 (acoustically dissimilar) words sounding different
        • Group 3 (semantically similar) words with similar meanings
        • Group 4 (semantically dissimilar) words that all have different meanings
        • Participants were shown the original words and had to recall them in the original order
        • When they had to do this recall task immedicately they tended to do worse with acoustically similar words (STM recall.)
        • When asked to recall the word list after a time interval of 20 mins (LTM recall) they did worse with semantically similar words
        • The study suggests info is coded semantically in LTM.
