Storage

  1. Optical

    • Lasers etch patterns on a disk. Patterns can mean either 1 or 0. These patterns are translated into a readable format.
  2. Magnetic

    • Layers of magnetism on a disk show a 1 or a 0. 1 layer of magnetism is a 1 while 2 layers of magnetism is 0
  3. Solid

    • Levers represent bits. They can be in two states - 1 or 0.
  4. Secondary Storage/Auxiliary Storage

    • Secondary devices are devices that are not constantly connected to the computer. Therefore secondary storage is storage that is not constantly connected to the computer. However, secondary devices can still be internal as well as external.
      • An example of this is a USB drive being external or a hard disk drive being internal.
      • Secondary storage is useful as it acts as extra storage and being more portable than Primary storage. It also can create backups for files.
