1.2 memory

  1. Flash Memory

    • Flash Memory- is a type of memory that is a solid state and has no moving parts.
      • a memory stick is an example of this.
      • flash memory maintains data in the absent of power supply
  2. ROM

    • ROM- Read only memory and this is Non Volatile
      • Non Volatile- Doesn't lose data when the device is turned off
  3. Cache

    • Cache- Cache is another type of storage and it is close to the CPU however it doesn't contain a lot of memory
      • it is faster than RAM
      • Cache is volatile
  4. Virtual Memory

    • Virtual memory is an area of secondary storage that is used like RAM
      • it is temporary storage
      • it is located on the hard drive
        • When the Hard drive is full you can no-longer do things such as copy
        • Magnetic storage device
      • Virtual memory is needed to let more memory in then there is in the system
      • Hardware which stores data other than RAM and ROM
  5. Register

    • Register-A CPU register is one of a small set of data holding places that are part of the computer processor. A register may hold an instruction, a storage address or any kind of data
  6. Solid State

    • Solid State- this is NO moving parts and it uses flash memory
      • because it has no movement it is very hard to hack
      • solid states are faster than Hard disk because there is zero latency
  7. RAM

    • RAM- Random access memory and this is volatile
      • Volatile- Gets emptied when the power is turned off.
      • very expensive
