Sampling Methods

  1. Quota

    • Quota sampling refers to a non-probability sampling technique, where the subjects have the same characteristics as the entire population
      • Ex: 50 females are asked to participate
  2. Random

    • Random sample happens when each member of the population has the same probability of being chosen.
      • Ex: 30 employees are chosen from a container with the names of the 400 employees
  3. Stratified

    • Stratified sampling divides the population into smaller groups known as strata, which have members that share attributes.
      • Ex: 300 students are being selected to do a antidoping, these students are separated by birthday month and a student per month is selected.
  4. Cluster

    • Cluster sampling divides the population into smaller groups known as clusters, then one cluster is chosen randomly.
      • Ex: 400 employees are divided into 8 groups, and then the 4th cluster is chosen from a container with all the groups.
  5. Snowballing

    • Snowball sampling choses participants and these chose more participants. It is used where potential participants are hard to find. It is a non-probability technique.
      • Ex: 5 participants are invited to come to a lab and asked to bring 10 friends next time they come.
  6. Convenience

    • Convenience sampling selects participants based on proximity and accessibility to the researcher. It is a non-probability technique.
      • Ex: Asking students to volunteer for the experiment
