Input and Output Devices
Manual Input Devices
- Definiton
- Data is input into the computer by hand (people have to do most of the work)
- Examples:
- Keyboard
- Numeric Keypad
- Joystick
- Pointing Devices
- Remote control
- Scanner
- Microphone
- Web Camera
- Digital Camera
- Graphics Tablet
- Definiton
What are they?
- Hardware devices that allow data to be entered into a computer
Where do they fit?
Direct input Devices
- Definition
- These devices require less human interaction in order to get data into a computer
- Examples:
- Magnetic Stripe Reader
- Chip and PIN Reader
- Optical Mark Reader (OMR)
- Optical Character Reader (OCR)
- Barcode Reader
- Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR)
- Definition
Sensors
- What are They?
- Device which automatically inputs data into a computer system, where the data is constantly changing and can be measured.
- What are they used for?
- They are used to detect data in the surrounding environment that constantly changes.
- Temperature
- Measuring heat in a room
- Light
- Setting off a burglar alarm
- Humidity
- Detecting when plants become too dry
- Temperature
- They are used to detect data in the surrounding environment that constantly changes.
- How does it work?
- There are information in 'physical' and 'analouge'
- Computers don't understand analogue data and therefore it needs to be converted to digital ( 1's , 0's)
- A special device called an Analogue to Digital Converter (ADC) is used in order to achieve this.
- Computers don't understand analogue data and therefore it needs to be converted to digital ( 1's , 0's)
- There are information in 'physical' and 'analouge'
- Examples:
- Temperature
- Sound
- Pressure
- LIght
- pH
- Humidity/Moisture
- What are They?
Output Devices
- Definition
- Hardware devices that allow information to be sent out of a computer system.
- Temporary output
- e.g. A computer monitor produces images on the screen that constantly refresh and change
- Permanent Output
- e.g. A printer produces outputs as hard copies on paper (these cannot be changed once printed)
- Examples:
- CRT Monitor
- TFT Monitor
- Laser Printer
- Plotter
- Dot Matrix Printer
- Speakers
- Inkjet Printer
- Multimedia Projector
- Definition
Control Devices
- Defintion
- Output devices that work in conjunction with sensor input devices and commands from computers in order to control a process
- Examples:
- Motor
- Buzzer
- Heater
- Light/Lamp
- Defintion
