P4 - Atomic Structure
Magnesium
- The number of protons in a magnesium atom is the atomic number.
- The sums of the protons and neutrons in a magnesium atom is the mass number.
Atomic structure
- The atomic mass tells us the total number of protons and neutrons an element has.
- The number of protons and the number of electrons in an atom is always equal.
- The atomic number tells us how many protons and electrons an element has.
- Two atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons are called ions.
- Atomic structure is made up of electrons, proton and neutrons.
- A neutron has a relative mass of 1 and a charge of 0.
- A electron has a relative mass of 1/2000 and a charge of -1
- A protons has a relative mass of 1 and a charge of +1.
- Atomic number= number of protons.
- The mass (nucleon) number= number of protons + number of neutrons.
- The particles in the atom which is not charged is a neutron.
- When you knock off a electron you are left with a ion.
- if an atom becomes an ion, it loses pr gains and electron.
- If it loses one electron it becomes 1+ and if it gains one electron in becomes 1-
Plum pudding model and nuclear model.
- There is a nucleus in the nuclear model.
- There is no nucleus in the plum pudding model.
- In the plum pudding model the mass is everywhere.
- In the nuclear model the mass is in the middle.
