- Foster family: Child/children are cared for temporarily by another family because their own parents are unable to look after them.
- Shared Care family: Parents live separately but share decisions about their child's care and welfare, and equally divide their time spent with their child between each parents house.
- Looked after children: Children live and are looked after a residential home for children. Not for very young children though.
- Reconstituted family: In a new relationship, one or both parents may bring children with them from a previous relationship.
