2.4 computational logic

  1. inside a cpu, transistors are arranged and configured into circuits to perform operations such as calculations when electricity is passed through them.

    • for example, transistors can be arranged to form an "adder" circuit that can accept two binary numbers and output the sum of their values.
      • AND gates have 2 inputs and one output.
        • OR gates have 2 inputs and one ouput.
          • NOT gates have one input and one output.
            • transistors are electrical components made from semi conductor materials that can act as electrically controlled switches
              • modern CPU's contain over 3 billion transistors, allowing them to perform billions of calculations per second
                • Moore's law famously stated that the number of transistors within an integrated circuit would double every 18 months to 2 years.
                  • computer systems store and process data as binary digits.
