Second Language learning errors

  1. Some causes of errors may be interference from the native language due to the native language being the one playing a significant role in their learning process. These types of errors are called interlingual errors.

  2. There exist 2 types of errors

    • Performance errors which are not serious and can be overcome.
      • & Competence errors which are serious because they reflect inadequate learning.
  3. Local errors do not hinder communication but Global errors are serious errors because they disrupt the meaning behind utterances owning to a wrong word disorder in sentences.

  4. Phonological errors consist on having a lack of distinction between phonemes. e.g saying pird instead of bird

  5. Morphological errors are those learners make when adding an [s] to words that are already pluralized.

  6. Lexical errors are the ones learners make when directly translating words from their native language.

  7. 1. Simplification is when learners want learning to be easier and do not challenge themselves for more somehow like avoidance.

    • 2. Overgeneralization consists on students using one structure for different structures having something to do with falsely hypothesized concepts , for example, when saying Goed instead of went.
      • 3. Hypercorrection occurs when learners use the incorrect grammar or pronunciation by induced errors.
        • 4. Faulty teaching consists on teacher induced errors which leads learners to inadequate learning/
          • 5. Fossilization errors happen when learners get used to saying something incorrectly and turns harder for them to get rid of.
