SUPERLATIVES

  1. There are two types of superlative: relative and absolute.

    • The relative superlative describes a noun within the context of some larger group.
      • example
        • John is the smartest boy in the class.
        • Mary is the youngest person in the room
    • The absolute superlative does not describe the noun in the context of a larger group.
      • example
        • John is very smart.
        • The book is extremely expensive.
  2. In English, the relative superlative is formed by using the word “most” or the ending “-est.”

    • example
      • John is the most intelligent boy in the class.
      • Mary is the smartest girl in the class.
  3. Superlative adjectives express the maximum degree of a characteristic of an element with respect to others of its same group or condition

    • example
      • The fastest car is the blue one
  4. How are superlative adjectives built?

    • In the adjectives of a syllable the article is usually added in front of the adjective and the ending -est behind.
      • example
        • The tallest
        • the oldest
      • If the adjective ends in a vowel -E Only -ST is added
        • example
          • The widest
          • the wisest
      • In the words ending in consonant + vowel + consonant The last consonant is folded and -EST is added
        • example
          • The biggest
          • the longgest
    • In the two-syllable adjectives To form the superlative, however, the most particle is added in front without altering the adjective, or you can add the article in front of the adjective and the ending -est behind.
      • example
        • The most clever
        • The cleverest
      • If the adjective ends in consonant plus -Y -Y is replaced by -IEST
        • example
          • The easiest
          • the busiest
    • In the adjectives formed by more than two syllables it is added to the superlative adjectives, the most is added in the preceding position without them suffering any alteration.
      • example
        • The most difficult
        • the most intelligent
    • In irregular cases a specific resulting form is obtained without being governed by any norm.
      • example
        • (The) Worst
        • (The) Best
