Connecting Peripherals

  1. Wired methods

    • USB - pen drives and dongles. reciving computer needs correct drivers to allow recognition of plugged in device.
    • Firewire - allows information to be quickly transferred between digital devices, for example, cameras, printers, scanners and computer systems. this is classified as a plug in and play device.
  2. Wireless methods

    • Wifi - used to connect computers or other devices together within a certain range. you need a hotspot (offers internet access by using a router connected to an ISP). you have to enter a password to protected networks. this hotspot or an AP can also act as a connector between a wired network and non wired network.
    • bluetooth - wireless technology that allows devices such as phones to communicate over small distances. this normally is pre-installed in most devices. you pair devices you want to connect using a passcode which is exchanged through devices.
    • infrared - connects peripherals through infrared adapters. usually done through external devices connecred to a PC and an internal device for example, a mobile phone.
