Bonding Types

1. Covalent Bonding

   • Shared pair of electrons between atoms.
   • Dative Bond: Bond where only 1 of the bonded atoms provides both electrons for the bonds.

2. Ionic Bonding

   • Electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions.
   • Common Ions
     • Nitrate: NO3(-)
     • Carbonate: CO3(2-)
     • Sulfate: SO4(2-)
     • Ammonium: NH4(+)

3. Metallic Bonding

   • Attraction of positive ions to delocalised electrons.
   • Giant Metallic Lattice Properties
     • Malleable: Can be hammered into shape.
     • Ductile: Can be stretched out.
     • High BP/MP: Attraction between electrons and positive ions is very strong, so a lot of energy is required to break the bonds.
     • Conduct Electricity: Delocalised electrons can move freely anywhere in the lattice
