Fractions basic operations

  1. Adding

    • For adding in fractions we have to have common denominators, when we got them just add the numerators: 4/3+2/3=6/3...
      • But sometimes we don't have the same ones so we have to find them for example: 6/8+3/4 as you can see they have different denominators so what we have to do is to multiply the denominators 8*4 and then multiply the first denominator by the second numerator 8*3 and the second denominator by the first numerator 6*4 = 48/32 simplified: 3/2
  2. Substracting

    • For substracting is actually the same that adding; we also have to have a common denominator and we just add the numerators.
      • If we have different denominators we do the same operation than in addition: 4/6 - 5/8 = (4*8 - 5*6)/(6*8) = 32-30/48 = 2/48 simplified: 1/24
  3. Dividing

    • To divide you just have to find the reciprocal of a fraction. To find the reciprocal you must change exchange the numerator and the denominator of one of the fractions: 3/4 divided 5/9 - 3/4 divided 9/5 And then multiply 3/4 x 9/5 = 27/20
  4. Multiplying

    • The easiest operation in fractions is the multiplication because the only thing that you have to do is to multiply the denominators and the numerators, for example: 3/8 x 7/2= 21/16
  5. Fraction to whole number

    • To pass from a fraction to a whole number you must divide the numerator by the denominator of an improper fraction, for example: 7/4 =
        • So the result is: 1 3/4
