FWA(Fixed Wireless Access)

1. Implementation

   • FWA operators use radio spectrum to offer service to customers.
   • A base station is located in an area where potential customers exist.
   • Provider connects base station to its own network and internet.
   • This service offers LOS(Line of sight)
   • LOS is necessary to ensure a reliable connection can be achieved.
   • An antenna is placed at the highest point on the building and receiving equipment is placed on the other end of a cable linking the two together.

2. Licencing

   • 3 spectrum bands identified
     • 3.5 GHz band
     • 10.5 GHz band
     • 26 GHz band

3. Advantages

   • It is relatively fast and offers a high bandwidth.
   • It is symmetrical.
   • Installation does not interfere with existing wired service.

4. Disadvantages

   • Coverage in Ireland is still not widespread.
   • In rented premises, permission must be sought to allow the equipment to be installed.
