1. Optical Mark Recognition (OMR)

   • Advantages
     • No wages to pay
     • Low reject if forms are filled in correctly
     • High reading speed
   • Disadvantages
     • Need tick style answers
     • Need clear instructions for users
     • Problems if forms are folded
   • Uses specially designed forms/cards
   • Documents batched together
   • Read Automatically

2. Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

   • Reads written or typed charecters
   • Scanned as an image and then recognised by software

3. Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR)

   • Number coded in magnetic ink
   • Printed on cheque
   • High cost of reader
   • Very high read speed
   • Does not matter if cheque has been folded
   • Hard to forge
