Reported statements
The reported clause is in statement form (subject + verb) We usually introduce reported statements with "reporting verbs" such as "say" or "tell":
When we use our own words to report speech, there are one or two things that we sometimes change: pronouns may need to change to reflect a different perspective tense sometimes has to go back one tense (eg, present becomes past) - this is called backshift
Examples: I’m from Spain. ⇨ He said he was from Spain. I love speaking in English ⇨ She said she loved speaking in English. I live in London. ⇨ He said he lived in London.
We use reported speech when we want to tell someone what someone said. We usually use a reporting verb (e.g. say, tell, ask, etc.) and then change the tense of what was actually said in direct speech.
Present simple ⇨ Past Simple. Present Continuous ⇨ Past Continuous. Past Simple ⇨ Past Perfect Present Perfect ⇨ Past Perfect Past Perfect ⇨ Past Perfect Can ⇨ Could Will ⇨ Would
