Solutions

  1. Solubility

    • Major entities
      • Depends on solubility of the products
      • Write out charges
      • Leave out coefficients
    • Acids
      • 6 strong acids have high solubility
      • Weak acids don't split
    • Ionic compounds
      • Check page 6 for solubilities
    • Molecular compounds
      • H-Bond = Soluble
      • No H-Bond = Low solubility
  2. Dissociation

    • Ionic
      • Soluble compounds dissociate into ions
    • Molecular
      • Soluble compounds become aqueous
    • Acids
      • Weak acids remain an aqueous compound
      • The 6 strong acids dissociate into H+ ion and the anion
    • Elements
      • Have low solubility but still write out as aqueous in dissociation equation.
      • Be careful of diatomic elements
      • Phosphorus and sulfur are P4 S8 respectively
  3. Writing equations

    • Always write products as aqueous in a dissociation equation
      • Not to be confused with balanced equation
    • Write out balanced equation
      • Know which are ionic , acids, and molecular
        • Check solubility on each
          • Write out total ionic equation
            • Cancel out spectator ions
              • Write out net ionic equation and reduce coefficients if possible
            • Elements have no charge and are in their natural sates
    • Be careful of acids and molecular compounds
      • Weak acids don't split. Strong acids do.
      • Molecular compounds don't split
  4. Concentration

    • Volume%
    • Mass%
    • M/V%
    • ppm and ppb
    • Molar Concentration
