How do we show electrons in atoms
- Through electron diagrams.
Valence electrons
- Electrons in the highest occupied energy level
- Responsible for chemical properties of the elements
- example: Nitrogen 1s2, 2s2, 2p3 the valence electrons are the 2 in 2s2 and the 3 in 3p3. Therefore nitrogen has 5 valence electrons.
- Valence electrons or an atom are shown as dots distributed around the element´s symbol.
