HARDWARE VIRTUALISATION
Hardware virtualization is used when VMM gets directly installed on the hardware system. The primary task of the hypervisor is to process monitoring, memory & hardware controlling.
Types of Hardware Virtualization: Full Virtualization. Para-Virtualization. Hardware assisted virtualisation.
- Full Virtualisation: In full virtualization, guest OS is completely isolated by the virtual machine from the virtualization layer and hardware.
- Paravirtualization : In paravirtualization, guest OS is not completely isolated but it is partially isolated by the virtual machine from the virtualization layer and hardware.
- Hardware-assisted virtualization : Hardware-assisted virtualization is a technology that allows for a CPU instruction set communication in which the VMM runs in a new root level mode below the OS kernel level.
Comparision between full and para Virtualisation
- Full Virtualization is slow than paravirtualization in operation.
- Full Virtualization is less secure than para Virtualisation.
- Full Virtualization is more portable and compatible than para Virtualistion.
- Examples of full virtualization are Microsoft and Parallels systems.Examples of paravirtualization are VMware and Xen.
Ring layers
- Ring 0:It is the level with the most privileges and interacts most directly with the physical hardware such as the CPU and memory.
- Ring 1:used to illustrate the realative privelege difference between a guest and its host
- Ring 2:can be used to configure with different levels of access
