IM & Amnesia

  1. Graf (1984)

    • Asked p's to judge how much they liked each word in a list. 3 EM tests: free recall, cued recall, recognition test. 1 IM test: word-stem completion
      • Amnesiacs showed poor performance on E tests but not on I tests
  2. Vaidya (1995)

    • No difference between amnesiacs and controls in either perceptual IM memory performance or conceptual IM performance
    • Poor performance observed with E perceptual and conceptual tests
  3. Findings conflict with TAP. According to TAP, amnesiacs able to perform IM tests because they retain perceptual processing ability

  4. Cermak (1995)

    • Explained findings in terms of dual-memory processes (Mandler)
      • Amnesiacs will exhibit normal memory performance when memory task can be accomplished on the basis of item-familiarity processing fluency
      • Implicit/perceptual tasks can be accomplished on this basis. Explicit/conceptual tasks require more context-based discriminations
