Student's motivation

  1. Self-determination theory

    • Intrinsic motivation
      • The doing of an activity that students perform for its inherent satisfaction. this is linked more to psychological health, to self-recognition and well-being, which means that the individual performs activities or actions for pleasure or pleasure to do them
        • If there is greater intrinsic motivation, greater well-being and motivation are generated in the academic field
          • Intrinsic goals are more inclined to well-being: personal growth, membership, health and community contribution (Sheldon & Kasser, 2001)
    • Extrinsic motivation
      • it's linked more to the external elements that encourage the elaboration or manifestation of a behavior, because it is shaped by a punishment or reward. Students are extrinsically motivated when they are concerned with performing an action because of the consequence associated with it
        • Tasks are performed under pressure or commitment, but not on their own initiative
          • This behavior is directed outward: fame, physical appearance and financial success (Kasser & Ryan, 1996)
    • "it is a broad theory of human personality and motivation concerned with how the individual interacts with and depends on the social environment" (Deci & Ryan, 1985, p. 2).
  2. Type of student's motivation

  3. How amotivation affects the learning process in foreign language

    • Students do not believe their efforts will improve their performance and they have other prorities that makes them lose their attention (Carnegie Mellon University, 2019)
      • They do not understand the lessons and they end up feeling unmotivated (Japari School, 2018)
      • That low motivation results in poor academic performance (Greate School, 2014)
  4. Role of motivation in language learning

    • This motivation can be focused on the desire to learn a second language
      • People will be able to attain long-term goals,
        • motivation is a key factor in successful language acquisition research. Nurhidayah, R. (2020). The Role of Motivation in Second Language
