P6-Waves
amplitude
- he amplitude is the maximum height of the wave from its resting position – the greater the amplitude, the louder the sound
Frequency
- the frequency is the number of waves per second
- the units of frequency are hz
- the frequency is the number of waves per second
Hertz
- what is uesed to m,essue soundwaves
Pitch
- the higher the frequency, the closer together the waves are and the higher the pitch
Volume
- how loud or quiet the sound is
echo
- A sound caused by the reflection of sound waves from a smooth surface back to the listener
longitudinal wave
- A wave that moves in the same direction as the direction in which the particles are vibrating
oscilloscope trace
- The wave pattern seen on the screen of an oscilloscope.
reflect
- Bounce off. Shiny surfaces, such as mirrors, reflect light well. Hard surfaces, such as walls, reflect sound well (producing echoes)
reflection
- There is a reflection when waves bounce off a surface.
ultrasound
- Sound with a frequency greater than 20,000 Hz (20 kHz).
wavelength
- The length of a single wave, measured from one wave peak to the next.
- the units of wavelengh are metres
- The length of a single wave, measured from one wave peak to the next.
micophone
- takes sound waves and turns them into eletrical signels
speaker
- takes electrical signals and turns them into a sound wave
types of waves
- longitudinal
- the waves move in the direction of travle
- like sound waves
- comprossetions-where the particals are close toghether
- raerfection- where the particals are far apart
- the waves move in the direction of travle
- transverse
- the waves move across the direction of travle
- like light waves or water waves
- the waves move across the direction of travle
- longitudinal
the ear
- pinna
- Ear canal
- ear drum
- Ossicles
- hammer,anvil and stirrup
- cochlea
- tiny hairs move and convert the soundwaves into an eletrical singnal
- Audlitory Nerve
- Brain
the speed of sound
- sound travles fastes in solids
- in water sound travels at 1500m/s
- in air sound travles at 330m/s
- sound dose not travel in a vacume
