First Conditional

  1. The negative structure is:

    • Interrogative + will + verb (in infinitive) + if + present simple?
      • Check out these examples of the English first conditional, in affirmative, negative, and interrogative:
      • What will you do if you go to bed late?
        • Will you need the car tomorrow if your friend comes to pick you up?
          • Will we invite Joel if she isn’t free tomorrow?
            • Will Brian go to work if he feels sick?
              • If I come with you, will you buy me lunch?
  2. The first conditional is used to express the future consequence of a realistic possibility now or in the future.

    • El primer condicional se forma con esta estructura Si + presente simple, será + infinitivo.
      • It is used to talk about what will happen in the future if a condition is fulfilled.
        • The negative form can be with don't, doesn't or won't, depending on what you want to say.
  3. Creating the First Conditional

    • To make a sentence in the first conditional, we use,
      • If + present simple, will/won’t + verb.
        • If I train for tomorrow's game, I will play well.
        • If I pass this exam, I will not have to retake it.
        • If I learn Dart, I will be able to program my own applications.
        • Like all conditionals we can also invert this structure:
          • Will + verb if + present simple.
            • I’ll celebrate if I pass this exam.
            • I won’t have to do this exam again if I pass it.
        • If I have no homework today, I will be able to play warzone with my friends.
        • if I brush my teeth every day, I will have clean teeth.
  4. The Negative Form

    • There are three formulas you can use to form a negative first conditional sentence in English
      • If + subject + (doesn’t/don’t) simple present, subject + (won’t) base verb.
        • If + subject + (doesn’t/don’t) simple present, subject + simple future (will + base verb).
          • If + subject + simple present, subject + (won’t) base verb.
      • if I don't obey my parents, I will be in a lot of trouble.
        • If it doesn’t rain this night , the football game won’t be canceled.
          • I won’t make it to dinner on time if I work late.
            • If I’m not busy, I will come with you .
              • If I don't go to work, I won't have any money tonight.
