Visible Light Spectrum

Map content

Visible Light Spectrum

  1. ground state- lowest possible energy level

  2. excited state- electron is in a higher energy level

  3. electrons are found in diff. places around the nucleus of an atom

  4. frequency increases from Red to Violet. Red lower energy level, violet highest

    • light is reflected by the surface that white light rays strike
      • light behaves as a particle & a wave. It travels in a wave format, can be viewed as a small particle that travels
  5. How Bohr changed the model of the atom...he said:

    • quantum model- they don't stay in one specific orbit, electrons are in "energy clouds" around the nucleus
    • Absorption and emission of photons causes electrons to move from ground states to excited state and back
    • electrons only circle the nucleus in orbits FALSE
    • the further an electron is from the nucleus, the more energy it has. (low, high energy)
