Python Text-Based Adventure Game
Prescribed Criteria
- Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
- Requirements
- All the variables work together to make a coherent story and must have a way to win the game
- Uses multiple variables that serve a functional feature or detail to the game.
- Uses at least 10 variables to make a larger, varying, storyline which gives more freedom to the user to choose.
- Requirements
- You must have at least two choices for each input. IE. Yes - No, Left - Right, Buy - Sell
- A wide variety of choices for inputs allows to meet the User Personas requirement to be able to 'make your own storyline'
- Requirements
- Has a deep network of pathway to go down; by using contrasting choices to match the user persona’s wants of having immersive storytelling a way to choose your own path/make your own storyline.
- The code must have at least have 2-3 input choices for the user to give more freedom to the game/ have a purpose in the game.
- Each choice must lead to a path/ have a way of losing or winning the game that actually makes sense rather than having irrelevant info without any hints to actually win the game.
- You must use a WHILE Loop
- Requirements
- Use a while loop with a break statement to actually have a way to win the game.
- Uses a break statement paired with the WHILE loop when someone loses or wins, to stop the code, and notify the user if they have won or lost.
- Requirements
- You must use variables that match your storyline
- Having a storyline that matches each section or path that can be taken can make the game play out like an adventure story - the user persons wants
- Requirements
- Uses relevant variables to make a detailed storyline to match the needs, expectations and wants of the user, and there also has to be enough variables to be able to choose multiple paths
- Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
Existing Text Based Adventure Games
- The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
- Humorous, sci-fi adventure game where players survive galactic situations.
- Cons
- Some puzzles/ situations are intentionally unfair, obscure or downright difficult.
- Can get frustrating because it is a long, tedious, harsh and hard game.
- Pros
- Creative and unpredictable puzzles/ situations
- Funny storyline and gameplay
- Cons
- Humorous, sci-fi adventure game where players survive galactic situations.
- Zork
- One of most earliest and influential text-based adventure games, where players explore ruins and solve puzzles while collecting treasures.
- Pros
- Classic/ Original gameplay
- Strong exploration and puzzle foundation
- Fundamental game step that inspired many later games
- Cons
- Difficult to play
- Very little guidance/ help for new players

Ideas for Story
- Player Questions and choices
- What faction do you choose to join? , Will you trust the wandering merchant?, Do you choose to attack or run from the enemy?, Which weapon do you choose to forge?, Will you save the hostage villager?, Which path do you choose to take?, Do you decide to enter the forbidden cave?, Do you challenge the boss or decide to prepare further?, Will you betray your faction for the quest of power?, Will you bestow the gods’ power upon yourself, or choose to restore it?
- Story Structure
- Choice between three faction
- 8 Main quests in the storyline
- Many choices to make giving player freedom.
- Player Questions and choices
Self-Determined Criteria
- The code must include Ascii and Ansi to make aesthetic images and colours.
- Ascii and Ansi code is present in the python code and in functional in the game.
- The colour and images must serve a purpose in the game and must relate to the storyline.
- Clear gameplay and user interface. There also must be a way to win the game, and if the player is stuck, then there must be hints to help the player.
- Simple, clear text input options, avoiding complex answers. Players should exactly understand what choices are available to pick from. Majority of the inputs are yes or no, to make the inputs simple.
- There must a be a clear way to win and players should also receive feedback/hints as to what their decision has done or a way to get out of a dead end/ death.
- The game must include clear conditions to win the game, which means that players know the main objective of the game and any other quest/ decision the player has to do.
- The game must have at least 3 major story branches to make a immersive storyline.
- The game must have at least 3 major story branches for the player to choose from, to add a “choose your own storyline path”, meaning that there are multiple possible endings/ ways to win. Each faction/ major story branch must have different quests, rewards and endings.
- Player choices must reflect into outcomes and consequences. Important decisions should change the status of quests, rewards and character status and survival status.
- The game must avoid repetitive dialogue, actions and features.
- The code must include Ascii and Ansi to make aesthetic images and colours.
Algorithm Constructs
- Sequence
- Instructions that are processed one after another in a specific order without skipping or repeating
- Iteration
- A structure that repeats a certain section of code multiple times until a condition is true or a condition is met
- Types of Iteration
- FOR Loop
- Used when the number of repetitions is known/ is fixed. It is the exact amount of times a code needs to run for.
- WHILE Loop
- Used when the number of repetitions is unknown. Repeats code for a certain amount of time until/while a given condition is true.
- Examples:
- while true
- while alive
- Examples:
- Used when the number of repetitions is unknown. Repeats code for a certain amount of time until/while a given condition is true.
- FOR Loop
- Modularisation
- Breaking a code into smaller parts/sections that can be reused or used to find errors/bugs in the code.
- Selection and Condition
- Performing a certain block of code based on whether a given condition is true or false.
- Example:
- if merchant_trust == "Yes"
- Example:
- Performing a certain block of code based on whether a given condition is true or false.
- Assignment
- Assigning or storing/giving a value to an variable
- Example:
- player_Name = input
- Example:
- Assigning or storing/giving a value to an variable
- Sequence
Coding Constructs
- Variables
- A container that stores a value
- Examples:
- health = 100
- strength = 25
- Examples:
- A container that stores a value
- If statement
- Runs code if a condition is true/met
- If else statement
- Runs a section of code if a condition is true, and otherwise it will run a different section of code
- Examples:
- If health<100 then use healing potion else continue adventure
- Examples:
- Runs a section of code if a condition is true, and otherwise it will run a different section of code
- while loop
- While a condition is met or is true, the program while continuously run a section of code
- Examples:
- while alive
- while true
- Examples:
- While a condition is met or is true, the program while continuously run a section of code
- Array
- An array is a lot of variables assigned/stored at once
- Function
- Saves lines of code by modularising repetitive code into a function which can be called as many times as required and whenever.
