Text-based Adventure Game

  1. Algorithm construct

    • Sequence
      • A set of instructions that are processed one after the other.
        • Example of sequence: Getting bag ready- 1.put books in 2.put lunch in 3.put water bottle in 4.Put laptop in 5. close the bag
    • Assignment
      • Assignment is storing a value in a variable.
        • For example, "Number of students in a class = 22" here, the "Number of students in a class" is the variable and "22" is the value stored in the it.
    • Selection/condition
      • A selection statement uses a condition to select which line of the program will be used next.
        • For example, "If the input is 'yes', display a smiley face" here, "If the input is 'yes'" is the program checking whether the condition is true or not, then a new command is followed if the condition is true
      • An IF statement checks if a condition is true
    • Iteration
      • Iteration is also called repetition and is used when something is repeated over and over again, so anything where the program goes round in a loop.
        • FOR loop
          • FOR loop is used when it is known exactly how many times to go round the loop.
          • FOR 8 steps MOVE left ENDFOR
        • WHILE loop
          • WHILE the colour is BLUE MOVE FORWARD ENDWHILE
    • Modularisation
      • Modularisation is the process of dividing a system, product, or software into smaller, independent, and interchangeable modules to enhance flexibility, efficiency, and scalability.
  2. Prescribed Criteria

    • Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
      • Create a text-based adventure game in Python in Thonny.
      • The variables created must be different.
      • The game itself must contain at least 10 variables.
      • The game must be include a health bar as a variable
    • You must have at least two choices for each input. IE. Yes | No, Left | Right, Buy | Sell
      • The game must contain choices for the users at the different turning points in the story that changes directions of the story.
      • Each input must have a minimum of two choices. For example, ‘save the princess’ or ‘leave the castle’
    • You must use a WHILE Loop
      • The game must include at least one WHILE loop
      • The WHILE loop must function properly and errors in the game must be limited
    • You must use variables that match your storyline
      • The variables used must be related your own story line.
      • The variables must be named and referred to in proper conventions, such as camelCase, or underscore between two words.
  3. Coding Construct

    • FOR Loops
      • A for loop is a control flow statement in programming that allows you to execute a block of code repeatedly
        • for i in range(5):print(i)
    • IF statements
      • The IF function allows you to make logical comparisons between a value and what you expect. It returns one value if the condition is true and another value if it is false.
        • If rain == true: print("Bring umbrella.")
    • Nested IF statements
      • Similar to IF statements, nested IF statements is a mixed of multiple IF statements, under the same indentation, to compare multiple conditions and give matching response.
    • WHILE Loops
      • While is a loop statement used to repeatedly execute a block of code as long as a given condition is True.
        • While True: print("Hello")
  4. Existing text-based adventure games

    • Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy
      • The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a comedic sci-fi series created by Douglas Adams. It follows the misadventures of Arthur Dent, an ordinary Englishman who escapes Earth's destruction just moments before it is demolished to make way for an intergalactic bypass.
        • One strength is that the plot and story itself is very interesting.
        • However, a weakness of the game is that it is sometimes confusing there's isn't enough hints to tell how to continue the story.
    • Forests of Lyrica
      • The Forest of Lyrica is the setting for a classic educational HTML5/JavaScript text-based adventure game. Designed as a beginner's coding project, the objective is to explore the wilderness, collect items like a magic flute, and ultimately slay a dragon to save the forest
        • The game contains interesting visuals that are related to the plot to engage the player and helping them understand the game.
        • The playability is limited as the game only have a few variables and don't have enough random elements, rendering the game boring in long term.
  5. Ideas of stroy

    • Setting
      • The setting of the game could be at an abandoned urban area, where a zombie apocalypse had happened.
        • Slow print function can be used to introduce the setting to the user in a slower motion.
    • Character
      • The character will be controlled by the user and choosing to do different actions based on the situation the user is in.
        • Characters could be named by the user at the beginning of the story and stored as a variable.
    • Plot
      • The plot of the story will be about zombie post-apocalypse
        • A break function can be used if the games ends or the player dies.
  6. Self-determined criteria

    • Criteria 1: Visuals relating to the story line must be included.
      • One example of ASCII image must be included once.
      • The ASCII image must serve the purpose of engaging the audience while helping them understand the meaning and direction of the plot.
    • Criteria 2: The story must be complete and has a whole narrative line
      • The story must have an introduction, complication, climax, and a resolution
      • The story has a specific theme and topic
      • The story must be clear, and the user can clearly understand the settings and situation which the character is in throughout the game.
