Item 2

  1. Prescribed Criteria

    • Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
      • At least have 10 variables throughout the text-based adventure game.
      • The text-based adventure game will have a start and a finish
      • All the variables must be different
    • You must have at least two choices for each input (IE. Yes | No, Left | Right, Buy | Sell)
      • Having two choices for each input at least
      • Choose either to run or attack
      • Choose fight or riddle
    • You must use a while loop
      • Must use a while loop
      • You must use variables that match your storyline
        • Variables that relate to the place/storyline.
        • Two choices for each input
        • Input the variables clearly without confusion.
        • The text-based adventure game will include 4 to 5 different venues throughout the game.
          • Include 4 to 5 different places/venues throughout the text-based adventure.
          • Include at least 3-4 two choices for each input
          • Relate the variables to the game
  2. Algorithm Constructs

    • Modularisation
      • Modularisation is used to reduce the complexity of a system by deconstructing it into independent units or modules.
        • FUNCTION delivery_charge CALCULATE totalCost IF (totalCost > $10) THEN OUTPUT ‘no delivery charge’ ELSE OUTPUT ‘$5 delivery charge’ ENDIF OUTPUT ‘thankyou’ END FUNCTION
    • Iteration
      • Iteration is also called repetition and is used when something is repeated over and over again, so anything where the program goes round in a loop.
        • For Example: DECLARE count SET count TO 0 FOR count = 1 to 10 OUTPUT count END FOR OUTPUT ‘finished’ (For Loop)
    • Selection & Condition
      • A selection statement uses a condition to select, or determine, the next line of the program that is to be executed
        • CALCULATE totalCost IF (totalCost > $10) THEN OUTPUT 'no delivery charge' ELSE OUTPUT '$5 delivery charge' ENDIF OUTPUT 'thankyou'
    • Assignment
      • Assignment is used to store the value of an expression into a variable
        • DECLARE studentName SET studentName TO Bob
    • Sequence
      • A sequence is a number of instructions that are processed one after the other
        • For Example: DECLARE count SET count TO 1 OUTPUT the value of count
  3. Coding Constructs

    • If Statements
      • If and if-else statements are used in Python to perform conditional execution of code. They allow you to specify one or more conditions and depending on whether the conditions are met or not, the code inside the if or if-else block is executed.
        • An example: if condition: # code to be executed if condition is True. Another example : if condition: # code to be executed if condition is True else: # code to be executed if condition is False
    • For Loops
      • A FOR loop is a common control structure in Python that allows you to repeat a block of code a specific number of times.
        • An Example: for item in sequence: # Code to be executed for each item in the sequence
    • While loop
      • The while loop is another control structure in Python that allows you to repeat a block of code while a certain condition is true.
        • An Example: count = 1 while count <= 5: print(count) count += 1
    • ELIF Statement
      • The elif keyword is Python's way of saying "if the previous conditions were not true, then try this condition".
        • a = 33 b = 33 if b > a: print("b is greater than a") elif a == b: print("a and b are equal"
    • Else Statement
      • The else keyword catches anything which isn't caught by the preceding conditions. The else statement is executed when the if condition (and any elif conditions) evaluate to False
        • a = 200 b = 33 if b > a: print("b is greater than a") elif a == b: print("a and b are equal") else: print("a is greater than b")
  4. Existing Text Bases Adventure Games

    • Bureaucracy developed by Douglas Adams
      • A comedy text-based adventure game made in 1987, based in London and Paris.
        • Strengths: Humor, Different characters, it has twists throughout the game,
        • weaknesses: Difficult to solve puzzles, complex codes, Game is too long, with more than 50 locations throughout the game.
    • Planetfall developed by Infocom.
      • A science fiction text-based adventure game made in 1983, based in a different universe.
        • Strengths: Mysterious storyline about an unknown planet, have to find clues to figure out the truth (suspense), Uses survival skills to try make the player head back home.
        • Weaknesses: Difficult to solve puzzles, complex codes, some people might find it hard to start the game for the first time.
  5. Ideas for story

    • Add more magical equipment
      • add more swords, potions, keys, gold
        • You help the Three eyed dragon and receive the potion, a sword starts to appear in your hand, which is glowing.
    • Allow any character to talk
      • by saying it shouted or it whispered
        • ("Answer My riddle or pay the price of death! it shouted.")
    • Has lots of places for the player to go through
      • By saying it enters a path and at the end of the path, a secret layer appears
        • ("You successfully passed the path with the three eyed dragon, however stumbled towards a unbalanced platform".)
