Resistant Materials

  1. Art Deco

    • Shapes such as spheres, polygons, rectangles, trapezoids, zigzags, chevrons, and sunburst motifs
    • Often arranged in symmetrical patterns
    • Modern materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, Bakelite, chrome, and plastics are frequently used. Stained glass, inlays, and lacquer are also common
    • Bright contrasting colors used
  2. Specification

    • 1. Materiials used and why
    • 2. Shape/ Ergonomics
    • 3. Color scheme
    • 4. Function
    • 5. Tools required
    • 6. Target audience/ theme
  3. Designing & Developing ideas

    • Developing
      • Model - a scaled down graphic representation of a design.
      • Prototype - a life size working model of a design used for testing development and evaluation.
      • Mock-up - a model of a product built for study, testing and display.
    • Designing
      • CAD
        • Designs can be modelled on-screen and viewed from any angle.
        • Reaction to outside forces such as wind flow and pressure can be modelled.
        • Control sequences can be simulated before working on the actual material.
  4. Evaluating ideas

    • Design ideas should be evaluated to make sure they meet product specification and are of a good quality
    • Does it meet the design need or situation?
    • Does it meet the needs of the intended users?
    • Does it fit the purpose for which it is intended?
  5. 6R's

    • Reduce -is it possible to reduce the amount of materials used? This will help to protect valuable resources.
    • Rethink - is there a better way to solve this problem that is less damaging to the environment?
    • Refuse - this means not accepting things that are not the best option for the environment. For example, is the packaging really needed?
    • Recycle - could recycled materials be used, or is the product made from materials that are easy to recycle
    • Reuse - could the product have another use? Could its parts be used in other products? Is this information clearly communicated on the product? This will extend its life.
    • Repair - is the product easy to repair? This will extend its life.
  6. CAD CAM

    • CAD
      • Can be more accurate than hand-drawn designs - it reduces human error.
      • You can save and edit ideas, which makes it easier and cheaper to modify your design as you go along.
      • The software itself can be expensive so initial costs are high. There are free software packages though.
      • Staff need to be trained how to use the software, which also adds to costs.
    • CAM
      • In large-scale production, the results are always the same.
      • Enables very high accuracy levels in large-scale production.
      • The software itself is expensive so initial costs are high.
      • Can be slower than traditional methods for one-off or low-volume production.
  7. Batch Production

    • is when a small quantity of identical products are made.
    • Batch production may also be labour intensive, but jigs and templates are used to aid production.
    • Batches of the product can be made as often as required.
  8. Product Analysis

    • What is the function and purpose of the product?
    • What are the different parts of the product and how do they work together?
    • How does the product use shape, form, color, texture and decoration?
    • What materials and components are used to make the product?
    • Which processes were used to make the product?
    • Who would buy this product?
    • How well does the product do its job compared with other similar products?
    • What is unique about the product?
  9. Research

    • Primary
      • First hand, unpublished data collected
      • E.g. Questionnaires, Interviews and surveys
    • Secondary
      • Published data which others have collected
      • E.g. Data collected from Internet, Articles and other companies
