Mind map: Innocence in To Kill a Mockingbird
Map content
Innocence
The title comes from the occasion when Atticus gives the children air rifles for christmas.
" Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit'em, but remember, it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."
Miss Maudie helps Scout interpret his word :
- "Mockingbird don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."
- This is a metaphor for human rights
- "Mockingbird don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."
Tom Robinson
- He is innocence for doing nothing wrong, but found guilty.
- After Toms death from trying to escape prison, Mr Underwood writes an editorial in the Maycomb Tribune which emphasises the symbolism: He liked Tom's death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters and children.
- He is innocence for doing nothing wrong, but found guilty.
Boo Radley
- He is a good person who is in jeopardy. When he kills Mr Ewell to protect the children, he should have been brought to court, but Heck Tate decides to report that Mr Ewell fell on his knife in order to spare Boo.
- Scout understands this: " bringing Boo to court would be sort of like shootin' a mockingbird, wouldn't it?."
Scout also shows innocence when not knowing that she stopped the mob killing Tom at the jail, by talking to Mr Chunningham about Walter. This rememeber Mr Cunningham about his family and how disappointed they would be with him so he told the mob to go an they did.
