Elements and Atoms

1. ATOMS

   • defenition
     • the smallest particle of an element that can exsist
   • structure
     • all atoms are made up of a tiny central nucleus with electrons orbiting it
   • there are 118 different types of atom
     • each type of atom has a different chemical symbol

2. ELEMENTS

   • defenition
     • a substance consisting of atoms which have the same number of protons - i.e the same atomic number
     • (basically) something made up of only one type of atom
   • the periodic table is made up of elements (there are 118 different types of element, so 118 different squares on the periodic table

3. on the periodic table...

   • elements on the left are metals and on the right are non-metals
   • elements are arranged into colums called groups and rows called periods
     • the 8 main all contain elements wth similar properties
