Kelley's Covariation Model

  1. - Kelley's theory of causal attribution in which people assign the cause of behaviour to the factor that covaries most closely with the behaviour

    • People assess three classes of information
      • 1. Consistency information - information about the extent to which a behaviour 'Y' always co-occurs with a stimulus 'X'.
        • Someone always does something in response to another
      • 2. Distinctiveness information - information about whether a persons reaction occurs only with one stimulus, or is a common reaction to many stimuli.
        • Someone always does something in response to everything
      • 3. Consensus information - information about the extent to which other people react in the same way to a stimulus 'X'.
        • Someone always does something, and no one else does
