P2.5.1- Atomic Structure
The basic structure of an atom is a small central nucleus composed of protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons
Electron- Mass= 0 and Charge = -1
Proton- Mass = 1 and Charge = +1
Neutron- Mass = 1 and Charge = 0
In an atom, the number of electrons is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus. Therefore the atom has no overall charge
Atoms may gain or lose electrons to fom charged particles called ions
The atoms of an element have the same number of protons, but have a different number of neutrons for each istope
Larger number is mass number- Total number of protons and neutrons
Smaler Number is Atomic Number - Total number of Protons
