Reported speech (statement)
Direct speech
We repeat the exact words that someone said. we usually use the verb say and the words of the speaker are put in quotation marks
Sara said, "Hind is on the phone"
Reported speech
We report the meaning of what someone said, without using their exact words. We use a reporting verb, usually say or tell, followed by that and the reported statement
Sara said that Hind was on the phone
When we change a sentence from direct to reported speech, pronouns and possessive adj change according to the meaning of the sentence
'I like your new car, ' said Ian
When a sentence change from direct to reported speech, tenese, modals and time expressions change as follows:
present simple to past simple …… present progressive to past progressive …… past simple to past perfect simple present perfect progressive to past perfect progressive will to would …… can to could …… CST 1 to CST 2 …… may to might …… must to had to …… now to then …… today, tonight to that day, that night …… yesterday to the previous day/the day before …… this morning/year.. etc to that morning/year.. etc …… here to there …… tomorrow to the next day/the following day ……age to before …… last week/month.. etc to the previous week/Month.. etc …… next week...etc to the following week
