MSM

  1. SM

    • encodes to STM if payed attention to
  2. STM

    • acoustically encodes 18-20secs duration capacity is 7+-2
      • STM duration evidence
        • peterson and peterson when P's aware they will be asked to recall after an interval and distraction task they pay more attention to STM giving 18-20secs duration but marsh et al 1997 say if P's are unaware they will be asked to recall then it gives up to 2 secs duration
      • STM evidence for capacity
        • george miller wrote article concluding we have a memory span of 7+-2 remembering words, letters, digits, music vogel et al (2001) 4 pictures 4 items,
    • evidence for encoding
      • Baddely P's had to recall semantically similar dissimilar and acoustically similar dissimilar words, they found that recalling similar acoustic was easier in LTM and similar semantic was easier in STM therefore LTM stores semantically and STM stores acoustically
  3. LTM

    • encodes semantically, unlimited capacity and duration
    • evidence for LTM duration
      • Bahrick et al 392 former high school graduates age 17-78yrs graduate interval of 2 weeks- 57yrs first condition was free call name people in pictures and second condition was recognition match names to faces
        • results- within 15yrs of leaving recognition was 90% accurate and free call was 60% but within 48yrs of leaving recognition was 75% but free call declined to 30%
          • conclusion- longer LTM better recalled through recognition
            • evaluate- extraneous variables like they may often go through the year book or may still be in contact with ex class mates
  4. Evaluate MSM

    • Glantzer and cunitz shows primacy effect (ltm) and recency effect (stm) is best recalled than the words in the middle of a list evident for 2 distinct stores
      • HM can't store new LTM but has unaffected STM evident for 2 distinct stores
        • KF acoustic memory effected but not visual suggests memory has more than 2 stores against MSM case study can't generalize due to individual differences
          • brain scanners pre frontal cortex active when STM is engaged and hypo campus active when LTM used shows evidence for 2 distinct stores
